I usually record programmes on a Humax 8000 PVR and, if I want to hold onto them, transfer them to DVD+RW using a Daewoo combined VCR/DVD recorder.

Lately, when playing back recordings on DVD+RW disks that I've made in recent days, I quite often get a stuttery picture & sound with the picture going in and out of pixellation. I use Verbatim DVD+RW disks which I thought were supposed to be good quality.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?

This morning, I've also tried playing several commercial, pre-recorded DVDs in my Daewoo combi. The first two were not even recognised and I kept hearing a clicking sound in the machine as it was trying to recognise the disks. Yet the third disk played without problem.

Could this problem be related to the stuttery playback in my post above?

Sounds like it is on it's way out.

Simple test. Take some of your RWs and test them on another player (or more). If you don't get successful playback then it is time to replace the Daewoo

The disks do work in my PC DVD drive.

The Daewoo is being very temperamental. It has since started playing one of my DVD recordings (which I recorded a while back) but would not play back a recording I made yesterday- the thumbnail image of the new recording is blank!!

Do I really have to get a new DVD recorder (only had this one for two years)?

Are you or anyone who lives with you a smoker ?
Do you live in a dusty environment ?
Do you use the player a lot ?
Do you play a lot of rental discs ?

Any of these can adversely affect the longevity of a recorder or player.

No one smokes in the house. Dusty (not especially!) . I always keep disks in their cases when not in use (well, occasionally, I've left them in the machine!) I do use the Daewoo a great deal - sometimes several times a week. And I've played a fair amount of rental discs in it.

Then again, I use my PC DVD drive alot which is a year older and that still seems to be OK. However,I use the DVD drive mainly for playback and only occassionally record from it so whether that has a bearing I don't know.
