Why do you need software when there are free ones to use? You can use IMGBURN, DVDFAB DECRYPTER, DVDSHRINK, & DVD DECRYPTER.

Here's some recommendations for dvd burners:
    PIONEER 112D, $32.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827129007

PIONEER 1810, $64.99 which is the retail version 112D sold at BEST BUY it does come with Nero software trial only I believe.

    LGH42N, $28.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136108

    LITEON LH-20A1P, 32.99
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106050

The LITEON is the only one that isn't riplocked. The PIONEER & LG are riplocked but you maybe able to use MEDIA CODE SPEED EDIT program to increase the read speed. If not then they're only be able to read commerical dual layer dvd discs at about 5-6x speed.

Take a look at Cdfreaks.com for more info on different dvd burners. They have BENQ, LITEON/SONY, ASUS/PIONEER, NEC, BTC, PLEXTOR, LG & SAMSUNG forums. Lots of information over there.

Budz has good advice for you, but the Pioneer drives are not riplocked. I picked up an 1810 the other day and based on the cdfreaks.com review of the 112. In that review (and in my experience) the 112 (1810) is not riplocked. I installed it, fired up my ripping program of choice and was grabbing DVDs faster than I ever have - at 12X speed or more.

The LG can have the riplock removed by MCSE. The LG H24L (with Lightscribe) is generally about $45 at Bestbuy with a Nero 7 OEM bundle, LG automatic firmware upgrades, PowerDVD and some other goobies.

I don't think the Pioneers have been riplocked since the DVR-109. My 110 and 111s all rip at around 12x.
