Hi all,
Had the drive operating fine on my machine for almost a year. Suddenly it now takes FOREVER to copy a disc (about 2 hours for a regular Verbatim DVD-R, which only took about 20 minutes before using media from the same spindle) I'm using Nero and had this problem before after I received an error from Nero saying it couldn't copy the disc. However after re-installing Nero and everything else the drive worked fine after re-installing the firmware (version C) I'm having the same problem now and re-installed the firmware and Nero with no luck. One thing I did notice with Nero is in the preview window when I am copying DVD's the video preview is much more jittery than before (I also De-fragged my Hard Drive as well) I also checked the drive and DMA is enabled. Again everything worked fine for almost a year and I made no hardware changes.
Help!

try using IMGBURN to burn a disc. nero is so buggy. did you use the nero clean tool after you uninstalled nero burn? if not try uninstalling nero again and then use the nero clean tool. if you're familiar with going thru your windows registry & regedit you can remove any ahead/nero files in there. sometimes even after uninstalling programs some files can be left in your windows registry. if you don't feel comfy going thru your windows registry then download the nero clean tool from their website.
if using IMGBURN the disc takes more than 20 mins then your dvd burner is dying then it's time to buy a new dvd burner. try IMGBURN first and if it fails then buy a new dvd burner which is inexpensive these days $30.00-$40.00. SONY uses rebadged drives meaning they use other manufacturers such as LITEON & NEC. SONY doesn't manufacture their own drives.

Number one factor = age
Number two = usage wear and tear
Issues such as these can be relative to the above factors when considering hard drives . If the drive is not 100% working effectively , it can cause burn speeds to drop drastically .
Do not use the hard drives manufacturer's tools to test drive , there useless and report nothing wrong . In other words , the manufacturers new hard drive install tool is perfect , but their diagnostic tools are utter rubbish .
Instead , download INSERT , a bootable security linux distro packed with tools to test hardware .
One of the included diagnostic tools is a very powerfull hard drive diagnostic tool , made for linux , use it in raw test mode , and the drive sounds as though its about to take off .
Check the results from raw test , against manufacturers specs . If raw test specs not within specs from manufacturer , drive is suspect , and cause of slow burn .
Sata drives may require an adapter , in order to carry out this test from insert linux distro , as it may not have been updated to support sata drives , esspecially on new p4 motherboards .
----
Its not always a fault with the burners , but other factors can contribute to slow burns that should be identified , in order to prevent wasting time and money on a new burner , makes sense .
----
Dma ?
Well , some do , so dont .
I have owned many different pcs using different components over the years , and have never used the drive set to dma , and have never , ever , had any burning issues .
My issue was when tdk went south , now its verbatim all the time , every time . -
