I'm new and thus, I probably have a problem that everyone else has seen and/or answered, so please forgive me if I repeat anything.

I just bought a DVD player/burner for my computer. It seems that it's not so easy as a CD drive. I thought that all i would have to do is burn the movies on my harddrive to a DVD disc and that would be it. I'm finding that this process is too hard for the normally stupid person to figure out. I'm hearing all about conversions and codecs and the like. I am not computer literate and therefore, I need someone to literally walk me through this process. I tried the software that came with the player, Nero, and it made no sense to me. I was able to burn a DVD (however, I don't remember how I even got it to work). It only plays on my computer and not my home player. Question: IS it even possible to burn a DVD from your computer files to play on a home DVD player????? Please help me, I'm desperate at this point. Thanks!

    To get you started.

    1. You can burn any movie file to DVDR so long as it fits on the disc (e.g. 4.3GB for DVD-5 single layer). Files over 2GB need to use UDF format. These usually only play on a computer DVD player.

    2. Playing a movie on a standard DVD player requires a specific discipline. It must conform to DVD specification. Read here https://www.videohelp.com/dvd

    3. The Nero software suppied OEM with burners usually can do #1 above but you need to upgrade to do #2. Many other DVD authoring programs are available and most are better than Nero.

    4. Some DVD players additionally support other than standard DVD video playback such as Divx or Xvid. The player specs limit what you can encode and play.

You can try a all-in-one converter like ConvertXToDVD. Or do some reading. We have guides for all the steps involved. Look to the left for CAPTURE, CONVERT, AUTHOR.

And hopealaska, in the future, please use a more descriptive title for your subject so it can be searched by other members. I will change yours this time.

  5. Gotta read the guides to fit your software.
    For example:
Get DVDFabDecrypter to rip your disc to your hard drive.
(Follow the guide thru the steps)

Get DVDShrink to use to compress the movie or reauthor (cutting out menus, audio tracks,
etc. that you dont need or want)

Use Nero or -another program if you wish- to write the info (usually in a "videt.ts" folder) to your blank good quality media.

3 simple steps can get you started. All the above mention software are free to download and use, since you already have nero.

But do yourself a favor and print out the guides you like or use and follow along each step. It's really not complicated after a couple tries.

Good luck and welcome to VH,
    NL

Thank you everyone. I'll try and let you know what happens. As for the person stating that if all else fails, buy a DVD recorder, I thought that was what I already had. Is there a recorder that is easier to work with?
