I'm trying to encode a Realmedia file to AVI with burnt-in subs, but I can't get change the size of the subtitles.

From searching the forum, I've gathered that it's an issue with the latest mencoder binary, and replacing it with the 9s version should work, but when I do that the subtitles aren't encoded at all.

    Running 10.3.9, ffmpegX 0.0.9x r2, btw.

    Hmmm...

works fine for me this way. I keep the 2 versions of mencoder in the Application Support/ffmpegx folder and rename them as I need them. If I want to burn in subtitles I rename the old version (6,3 MB size) "mencoder" and the new one (15,9 MB) "mencoder_w", otherwise I rename the old one "mencoder_s" and the new one "mencoder".

But that's for converting avi or mkv to avi. Maybe the problem lies in the realmedia files?

Have you tried converting the real to avi with the new version, and then avi to avi with subs with the old version? Maybe this solves the problem.

This can be related to an incorrect text encoding setting (i.e if you select ASCII whereas your file uses UTF, subtitles won't be burned). If you are unsure, open your subtitle file with TextEdit, then export it to UTF-8.
