I splashed out on the Sony HD7 camcorder, partially because it said it had wideband colour, known as xvYCC colour (branded by Sony as x.v.colour/x.v.color).

I was away to buy a Samsung 40" LCD with HDMI 1.3 which lists wideband (xvYCC) colour support.

But after speaking with Sony Tokyo and HDMI org, it is news to me and I guess most others that features of HDMI 1.3 are not guaranteed to be present. Wideband colour being one of them. So far I have not managed to find an LCD display with this colour support apart from Sony.

So there seems to be little point in saying something supports HDMI 1.3, what matters is feature support. I had assumed the spec meant certain features were guaranteed.

Many specifications are written to be inclusive of as many manufacturers as possible.

As a result some features which some users find desirable are optional and only implemented by the manufacturer who proposed them. There is usually a core of mandatory features.

Arguing for such specs is that the alternative to loose specifications is format wars.

Of course loose specifications have been commonplace for some time, and have not prevented format wars such as DVD-R vs DVD+R.
