    Hi,

I'm a newbie and I'm trying to find a software program that will allow me to cut part of a video out. All the video files I have are avi files. I have films that are over an hour long but I only want 5 minutes of some of the films. Could someone recommend a program that would do this in the easiest and user friendly way possible?

Ok, I got virtualdub...but ti's a zip file. Do I just unzip all the files into a folder? Also, do I need to do anything with the auxsetup.exe file?

yes, you can just unzip it to a folder and run it from there.

The auxsetup is to prepare the frameserver. It only needs to be run once, and only if you intend to frameserve from vdub to your mpeg2 encoder.

yeah, the problem is all those tutorials have nothing to do with editing a divx, they're all about converting stuff from one thing to the next.

Just set audio and video to direct stream, save as AVI once you're finished. DivX or XviD or DV or whatever doesn't matter.

Use the newest versions of Virtualdub ( 1.7 ) with Smart Render to exact frame edit.

Make sure you set the compression under video to match the compression of the original avi. If it's XviD, set the codec to single pass target quantizer.

You can either use Fast Recompress or Full Processing Mode with Smart Render. It Direct Stream Copies most of the file and only re-encodes where there weren't any key frames at your cuts.

Using Direct Stream Copy in VirtualdubMod or older versions of Virtualdub will not let you exact frame edit.
