Hi,
I have been searching to find if a USB to IEEE 1394 4 pin cable I have will work in connecting a Samsung VP-D361i Digital Camcorder to my PC to transfer video for editing and burning via the DV port.
I have connected it to the cable & PC and I get an error saying device is malfunctioning or not recognised. I went to the Samsung site and loaded the driver which did nothing. Not sure if I need more drivers for firewire or if it will never work and I should pruchase a IEEE 1394 card and cable.
Appreciate some advice.

You tried connecting it directly via firewire? or your having problems with the USB?
Whatever the case you need to use firewire, USB for most cams is a low quality video and not a direct transfer like firewire. -
I do not have firewire but some sites say you can use USB2 to transfer with this cable. I thought I might not have the right drivers?

It will tansfer video but again its low quality. If it transfers the full DV quality over USB than you have a rare model on your hands. Some pro cams have this feature but I'm not aware of any consumer models that work over USB .
Note that the USB is also for tansferring still images from a memory card if it has that feature.
As far as a combo cable I really have no idea but my guess is that the brick wall is going to be the software. I'd also imagine you are going to lose the ability to control the cam and other things. Save yourself some grief and get a firewire card and cable. Plug and play.... -

If you did have one of the rare models with USB DV transfer it would require special software from Samsung to get the DV-AVI file into the camcorder. Then you would import the file into your edit program. The edit program won't see or control the camcorder through USB except maybe as a digital camera (stills, webcam formats).
