Just wondering what the best software for backing up movies is? I currently am using DVD Shrins and Shrinkto5 with machinist2.dll. I would love to be able to continue to use DVDShrink, is there a way to make it work with the machinist DLL?

Ripit4me ... this app uses dvddecrypter to rip the dvd ... it then tidies up any neccessary files (to defeat new copy protections) ... then it uses dvdshrink to shrink to dvdr

I do not know anything about machinist.dll so am unable to help with that .... however ripit4me will do what you're asking and is considered one of the best apps for the job ... alternatively you can use dvdfabdecrypter (also highly recommended) to rip a dvd before loading it into dvdshrink .... both these apps are free

As another alternative you can use dvdshrink whilst running anydvd to rip the dvd ... anydvd however is not free

Ok ... so machinist.dll is used to overcome Sony ARccOS/ripgaurd protections ... but it only works with shrinkto5 .... i doubt that it will ever work with dvdshrink as they are 2 totally different apps ... the dll was developed for use with shrinkto5

The solutions i have given above will also defeat ARccOS/ripgaurd but will allow you to use dvdshrink to transcode your dvds ... its the method used my myself and most people on here

Actually the DLL was not developed for shrinkto5, it was developed on its own. Someone at work says you can use the DLL with Nero and rip with it.

The Best for what part of backing up?

Ripping? Encoding? Transcoding? Authoring? Burning? All in one?

Alas, there really isn't a 'best'...
There are a variety of tools that can be used for a variety of conditions, that involve bitrate, compression, etc. It is best to narrow it down to some specifics, then do a few searches

The best is only one software needed and just one click or several clicks to complete ripping, encoding, transcoding, authoring and burning for any protective movies plus error tolerance. Have you seen it?

    That covers it well.

Out of curiosity, I got "Casino Royale", mainly to test the protection. RipIt4Me and DVDFabDecrypter had no problem. However, for the first time I encountered a disc for which I could NOT create a PSL with DVDDecrypter. Same for the PSL2 plugin for PgcEdit. On a previous thread, I asserted there was no disc that couldn't be backed up by creating a PSL file. WRONG. :P

So for fun, I tried to find a workaround. Running DVD43, it was possible to open the disc in PgcEdit and identify the main movie. Then opened DVDShrink 2.3 (old version) and pointed it at VTS_01_0.IFO. Shrink errored as expected, okay. Hit reauthor, drag title 1 over, go to Start/End frames. For start, jump to chapter 2, then reverse to just before opening screen. For end, back up 1 chapter, then step forward to just after end credits. Okay. Backup uncompressed. Then open the rip with DVDFab 0.17.1 and create video title manager.

Turns out in one way this isn't such an unusual ARccOS disc, it has unreferenced junk at the beginning and end of the main movie. But the complication in the structure overall (99 titlesets!) defeats DVDDecrypter and the PgcEdit plugin.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

In my opinion, the following have worked well for me:

Ripping: Ripit4me - 100% success, where others have failed.

Transcoding at 90% or better compression level: DVDShrink - easy, fast, plus a reauthor mode offered.

Encoding for anything greater than 90% compression: DVDRebuilder w/ HC encoder (free) or CCE Basic($58 ). Very simply, the best backup system for anything needing moderate to heavy compression.

    Authoring/menu: DVDlabpro

    Burning: Imgburn
