I've been using TMPGENC Plus 2.5 for years now to convert various types of Divx and other.AVI files into MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files for later burning into VCDs and DVDs. Suddenly it stopped working for no apparent reason on certain Divx & Xvid AVI files. I'm getting the standard "cannot open or unsupported" error message. I've tried rearranging the priority of all the various codecs to no avail. Some Divx file seem to work just fine while others are crashing. I'm using a full-blown Divx 6.5.1 registered version. When I try to load a file the little blue Divx icon briefly appears in the system tray before it crashes. Other files the blue icon appears and file loads and converts just fine.
Oh by the way I forgot to mention that these same files that will not work on my main machine converts fine on my laptop using 2.5. The only difference I can see is the laptop doesn't have the latest version of Divx so there's probably something strange in the latest Divx causing all this.
I downloaded the trial version of Tmpgenc 4.0 but I really hate the user interface after years of using 2.5. The user interface on 4.0 doesn't work well on a 800x600 screen.
So my question is has anyone else experienced sudden changes in the behavior of 2.5? Do you have any other suggestions other than raising the priority of the direct show Codec?
What other MPEG converter would you recommend for a former tmpgenc plus 2.5 user who can no longer get the crazy thing to work?

Thanks for the tip on SUPER. I will check it out.
It's not just the new user interface on TMPGEnc 4.0. I would get used to it eventually does the fact that you can't see all the controls on 800x600 resolution screen. I have other software that I use on a regular basis that really needs to be at 800x600 and it would be a pain to constantly switch screen resolutions back and forth.
2.5 is still working for most files but occasionally I get one that just won't convert. I will probably register 4.0 and use it when 2.5 doesn't work. -
Okay I downloaded SUPER and installed it. Selected various options for converting to VCD. Adding file to the list to be converted and nothing happens. What do I click on to tell it to begin converting? It says it will try to play or convert but how do you tell it to just go ahead and do the conversion or on the other hand if I wanted to play the file how do I tell it to Play?

add files to the list and click on the Encode button

Again screen size is my problem. I couldn't find an encode button on my 800x600 screen so I switched to 1024 x 768 and there was still no encode button. Then I closed down SUPER and restarted it at a higher resolution and the buttons were there. But when you start the program at lower resolution there's no way to access the buttons at all. It looks like a really useful program and of course since it's free I'll keep it but it doesn't solve my problem.
Many thanks for all of your help I appreciate you taking the time. -
Switch to 1024*768. 800*600 is more tha obsolete.
For the files which crash, they play fine in media player or any other player ???? -
Gee that was a really helpful suggestion. (What is the emoticon for sarcasm?)
As I said earlier in this thread I have other absolutely necessary software that really needs to run at 800x600. I have a physical disability and use specialized software to help me use the computer. I would have to do a major recalibration that software to use larger screen size. -
Try loading your avis with avisynth.
Download avisynth.
open notepad and write:
avisource(filename.avi)
save as 'all files' with an avisynth extension, like filename.avs
treat the avs file as your video loading it instead of avi to tmpg.
or try
directshowsource(filename.avi)
if the above fails.
TMPG 2.5 is godawfully old and tired.
Some encoders that are fully visible in 800*600:
1.HC, free excellent encoder. requires avs input. (like above examples)
requires that you process audio separately
2. QuEnc. similar to above. Can do audio if it's in avisynth script (mp2 only I think).
3. CCE. You could use CCE basic at a reasonable cost.
4. Procoder Express. Might still be able to get a copy of a cheap encoder using the powerful
procoder 2 engine. It's been or is about to be discontinued.
5. One click wonder convertXtoDVD. Handy.
