  1. Is it true that it is no longer possible to remove windows media player and use Media Player Classic instead?

Even when I try to just Make Media Player Classic the default for opening .mpg files, the change doesn't stick. Double clicking on files always opens Windows Media Player instead.

Actually, you can disable WMP, I have done it on several computers: http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips1503.html

  4. And MPC is my default player for just about everything, including MPEGs.

  5. I've seen windows get "confused" about the default player association. The symptom was exactly the same -- no matter what program I tried to make the default for MPG files, WMP would be used. I think I fixed it by completely deleting the MPG file assosiation and setting up a new one.

I use VLC for my video default and the association sticks, but the icons all show not as little safety cones (like they used to) but as those darned WMP four color circles. VLC opens them all though...
