    Are there any freeware tools which can be used to determine what write speed was used to burn a disc? I have a DVD+R disc which was burned a long time ago and I want to know what speed it was burned at.

    Every so often I want to know this for different reasons, but all usually having to do with troubleshooting. In my latest case, I noticed that one of my DVD drives was burning a particular 16X DVD+R at 6.4X (according to display from the software I was using). I was a little suspicious, so I thought I would check some discs I burned last month using the same method. I am trying to determine if this is a new problem, or if it has always been that way.

    Does anyone know if the burn speed is written to the DVD?

  5. You could look at the top of the disk & see what speed the disk was. It should say so. Chances are it was written at the top speed.

    Unfortunately, that is exactly what I am trying to test. I want to know if it REALLY was burned at the maximum speed.

  7. I believe there was a registry tweak for NERO that allowed you to view in realtime the actual burning speed while burning - Unfortunately once the disc is burnt you cannot get that info, as it is not stored. Sorry.

    OK, thanks. At least I know now, so I don't waste time trying to find it.

    To show recording speed in Nero:

    1. Start-> Run-> type Regedit
    2. Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ahead\Nero - Burning Rom\Recorder"
    3. Go to Edit-> New -> DWORD Value
    4. Rename "New Value #1" to "ShowSingleRecorderSpeed"
    5. Click on it and select "Modify"
    6. Now set the value 0 to 1

    That registry edit is used with Nero 6; it forces Nero to show the actual real-time write speed during the burn rather than just the selected speed.

    ...Which wasn't the point of this thread, which was how to determine from an already burned disk, what speed it was burned at.
