I am about to start looking for a new television and I would like some advice as to which is the better tv to get, plasma or lcd. Can anyone pass along some information or links to information please. I was thinking around 32 or 37, maybe go to 40. I did a quick glance yesterday at Sears, had to get a drill bit set, and there are sure alot out there. They have a 37 inch Protron for 799.99 and a 32 inch protron for 599.99 both lcd's. I asked the sales person the difference between the lcd and plasma and the person responded the plasma has glass front and started talking about the extra warranty. The person did not strike me as knowledgeable and just wanted to push the extra warranty so I said I had to do some research. So I logged on to my favorite site to get some advice.![]()
If it matters, I do back up my dvd's with dvd shrink and I do transfer dv footage of daughter and encode with mainconcept and/or tmpgenc to dvd video. I know I will not have to change how I backup dvd's but I might have to change the way I encode with tmpgenc, something I read about the overscan settings. Yes, I sometimes do KDVD for daughter movies to put two on one dvd for the player in the family truckster and sometimes use the same dvd in the house.
Thanks in advance for all help and advice.

I was recently talking to a sales rep in a major electronics store here in Australia and asked the same question. He bombarded me with all this tech talk about colors being truer in one or the other and that LCD's last longer, but when I watched the same program on a plasma and LCD side by side, I couldn't tell the difference in quality at all. I've heard something about some new type of TV coming out soon that will be far superior than both, so maybe I'll wait for that - or just buy a plasma or LCD then because they'll be worth so much less. Anything has to be better than my old round screen CRT.

it is simple - lcd is brighter and has less glare and may have more colors.
plasma has better contrast and is better if also watching sd ..
it also has a better picture -in the right conditions,,,,
very few 32" plasmas around .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
thanks for the replies! i just might go with a lcd for the less glare! but i will start reading up on em.

I bought the Samsung LNS4096D which is a 40 inch LCD and it is fantastic. If you don't need cable card, you can buy the LNS4095D which as far as I can tell is same TV minus cable card and (I think) a media card slot to directly watch JPEGs you might take on a digital camera. This TV is fantastic. Connections to HDTVs are really important and many of the people who complain about poor pictures have poor connections to the TV. I run my cheap Philips DVP-642 DVD player to the TV via component connections and using progressive output and everything I play on it looks fantastic. You'll need a high quality (typically component or DVI) connection from any cable box to the TV too or you won't be real happy with the picture. That's why I'm using cable card as with it, I don't need a cable box. Many people that complain about poor quality pictures don't have the right connection to the box. I can tell you that if you connect coax cables to a HDTV that you aren't going to be real happy with the results.
I bought LCD because I felt that at this time they were basically as good as plasma, but if someone feels strongly against that opinion, I wouldn't argue it. I'm really happy with the picture on my TV which is what matters. As far as future TV technologies go, they're likely to be really expensive for a while and may not necessarily be any better than LCD or plasma. A good friend of mine has a Samsung DLP HDTV and while it is a fine TV, I think mine is just as good if not better and cheaper. -
I bought a 60" Phillips DLP about 6 months ago. Much cheaper than plasma and personally I like the picture better than any of the several LCDs I looked at. Getting a good price at Sam's Club helped too.

nothing look "fantastic" if the source is not HD on any HDTV. if you buy one be sure to invest in a HD-DVD player ,or Blue ray

Well, I bought the 37" and let me tell you that it really looks like s--t. Regular channels look horible, i then put in a dvd and it was a little better but my 32 standard blows it away.
Looks like i shall be returning cause I am not ready to buy all new components.Fun in the sun, Oh no my friend, Fun on the sun!
