My brother is looking at buying this TV and asked me what I thought.

I looks good in the store, and whilst not full HD he is not a hi fi buff and like many just wants a nice big screen in his house, and it has a built in set top box to free a port and not clutter the place.
The people at the store though seem to be plugging LCD over plasma. They tell me that LCDs have a higher resolution and are sharper. But this confuses me as I thought if you buy a tv with a resolution of say 1366x768....it doesnt matter what screen it is that is the resolution you get.
Is it a case of sales people not knowing what they are talking about or is there something to what he is saying?
edit* Is this meant to be in the digital TV forum? I couldnt find a way to move it if it is, sorry.

the 42PX600 has an excellent picture.. it is not as bright though as an lcd , but IMO , has a better picture and much better contrast ratio ...
i have one (along with several others)
in a bright room - go lcd , lcd also is great for sports in HD only ..
this plasma better for movies and darker rooms"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
NEVER NEVER NEVER believe sales people about electronics. Resolution has nothing to do with whether a TV is LCD or plasma. I like LCDs because they are cheaper than plasma and they've overcome a lot of the things in the past that made plasma a little better, but BJ_M has good advice for which circumstances one is better.

I have the previous version, the TH42PX60 and it knocks spots off any LCD. The picture is absolutely superb and with a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 black is black and white is white. The current model in the UK is the TH42PX70, with the 700 having just been released.
Don't worry about the HD only being 1080p, the picture is so good, you almost don't need HD (or you don't in a PAL country anyway....) -
What is strange is in Europe, LCD of standard definition (without any HD certification,...) have often a vertical resolution of 480. Why 480 while PAL is 576 ?????

Good question , But the answer is easy. The manufacturer is creating the panels (LCD and plasma) in big parts. The size of display determines how many pices he will be able to cut from full part.
It makes the up and down scaling very popular (between manufactures) . The user should buy only true hd display or display in native 720p resolution. The first is easy this day but the second was and is very hard. (I will not write about native pal and ntsc because it isn no time for it).
