    Hi everyone

For those still in love with the WIN98.. I was just curious about something.

Was there ever a Service Pack Release for win98 -to- win98SE, where you could
D/L certain drivers, etc. to turn your 98 into an 98SE. I'd be willing to
to ahead and D/L the drivers -- no matter how large -- when i get back to
    work.

The reason is simple. I have a few capture cards that will not install and
work unless OS in 98SE or higher. And, i'm still not willing to install my
store purchased XP home edition windows. Not for a long time. So its just
going to have sit much longer on the shelf. (I hate MS activation stupidity)

Thank you for your interest with this request

SE was not a SP to 98, but more like a Win32 version of Windows 2000 (as was ME). It's a whole different OS, not just a 98 update.

I recall that when Win98SE came out that Microsoft would send you a free Win98SE CD-ROM if you already had Win98 ... actually I think you had to pay $9.99 for it but that was a deal especially considering that back then no one had broadband other than maybe Universities and/or very large businesses.

I might still have one but I'll have to "hunt" for it ... can't promise nothing ...

  4. I recall there were about 5 different flavours of win98, and the SE was the best and most stable edition.
    winME was a joke.

P.S XP is worth the upgrade

  5. When I installed Win98Se on my setup in 2002 I saved it to a folder in C:\ for file replacements from corrupt files , just in case..

    No.

The best forum on this is MSFN.org, specifically http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showforum=8

There you will find info about what updates you can apply to Win 98.
I suspect though they will not solve your problem; 98SE has fundamental differences from 98.

I used ME for years and still have it on one computer. ME got a bad rep because MS released it without proper driver support in place. It took 6-12 months before ME specific drivers were available. It is by far the most stable release before XP.

What of Win 2k, or for that matter, NT?

    Hi all.

Sorry I coulnd't get back to your replies -- thank you all -- but I've been
pretty tied up, and tired from the day-to-day ware n tare of work. You
    know how it goes. Anyway.

173mb in size.. I knew it had to be fairly small. I know I've seen it on
MS 's website a long long time ago, but with dial-up, who would dare.
Anyway, back then, it was probably a mistake on their part, (found via FTP)
and is long since removed since they are into Vista, now.

A friend of mine at work said that he still had his disc and would give it
to me since he no longer uses it, but its been a week, and he hasn't returned
with anything ta smile about. And I've already reminded him, twice.

Thanks to you all for your responses.

NT? ... NT4? Surely you jest!

WinME and Win2K came out around the same time, more or less, and were the predecessors for WinXP, which took the best qualities of both of those OS.
