So is there any expected release date for a Vista service pack? I'm just curious.

I really dont have any issues with my Vista Premium. Just some minor things that might get cleared up. Like it seems to hang up when I stream photos and do a slideshow with the builtin windows slide show. Doing the wifi streaming and the slideshow simultaneously seems to be an issue for vista. I can easily stream the pics and show them at full screen size just not in the slideshow. Minor issue but odd.

Also it seems to take forever to copy a simple dll file over to the program files directory. You know for things like virtualdub and stuff. It also prompts you like forever when you want to manually copy into the program directory. It seems like MS gets more and more paranoid about the program files directory with each windows release.

Anyway - any idea on a release date? Also how large are service pack release? Are we talking like a 100mb or more???

  2. Beta 1 for SP1 will be out later this month. The final product is supposed to be out by November to coincide with the release of Windows Server 2008.

Wow thanks dv8ted2. Didn't think I'd get a firm answer that fast

Well I'll just wait for the release then.

it's so f'n sad that the first thing we eagerly await from Microsoft is a patch for thier new OS. XP was a HUGE improvement, and IMO 'Vista' should have simply been 'SP3' instead.

Just a thought... Its possible you have a 'RAM paging' issue, or your security suite is getting involved & causing a stutter. I had a prob with Trend checking every I/O operation- boy, was that slow!:]

Yoda what type of issues are you having with the slide show again? Because I have a large LOCAL picture collection that the slideshow screen saver shows off and for some reason the Vista version though it looks pretty takes upto a 1 min to exit and give me my desktop back.

And my computer i NO slouch

  9. Strongly recommend on any MS service pack you wait at least a week or two for others to report on whether it causes more problems than it solves.

I guess I don't understand that terminology. Is that some kind of buffer file??

@ Faustus - I don't have any issues with on computer files or even ones on my usb harddrive. Its only the wifi streaming. when it bombs on slideshow mode. Again the weird thing it works fine on full screen mode.

For the slideshow to do an effect like a dissolve, it must have loaded at least 2 pictures at once. If you have a newer camera, chances are that means say 6 megapixels X 2 or 3 (preloading), plus the overhead needed to run the transition effect. Also, the pictures may be uncompressing to even larger files. This isn't to say there isn't enough RAM, just that the slideshow program may not be allocating enough.
The video card may also be borrowing some RAM, and some have said that 1G isn't enough to keep Vista happy.

This is easy enough to check- just have the slideshow run a set of downsized pictures, 10 or so at something under mebbe 200K each. You should be able to see big improvement if this is the prob.

Do you also have real slow creation of photo thumbnails?
