    Hi all,
I am new to this site and this topic but I am really hoping you can help! I have recently bought a MP4 player. It took me a week to figure out how to convert DVD to AVI so that it worked on my player (told you I was new to all this!) but now, although it plays well, the movie plays slower than the audio. I have tried all sorts, Avi Gain, got stuck on using Mencoder and Virtual DUB Mod and I am still not nearer to solving the problem. The AVI Gain produced 'fixed' files, but to play them on my player I had to use AVI Converter 3.0 again to make it playable!

Can anyone help???? (I may need step by step instructions - sorry!)

Thanks in advance to all who try to help! You are all angels!

    Thanks. Soph.

What format AVI? That's just the name of the container, not the format. There are probably a hundred variations under that container name. Usually the name of the codec is what defines the format.

But I would guess Xvid or Divx.

If so, you might try AutoGK for a easy conversion. avi.NET is another. Both freeware. Ripping the DVD may be the start of the problem. If not done right you may cut out things like the FBI warning and throw off the timing of the rest of the video if it's not accounted for.

You should check your ripped file with a player like VLC or similar and see if the sync is alright. But at least you need to find where the video is going out of sync.

Most programs listed in our 'Tools' section have guides. Just look to the bottom of their toolpage.

    And welcome to our forums.

AutoGK is a really good app as well. It'll get easier for you. Took me months to figure some things out, and I still learn new things every day. I created a little script that attempts to fix a file that has bad A/V sync. Have a go at it and try it out on the test file in the post.

Thanks guys, I shall give them both a try. My videos seem to loose track of the audio when put through the converter. I wondered whether it was something to do with the fps? The video is a lot slower than the audio. The problem I have found with using a different converter is that my MP4 player will then not accept it. For some reason it only accepts files put through the accompanying converter. I shall let you know how I get on.
    Thanks.
