  1. does anyone have any experience with this? What can I expect?
I tried using my tv wonder 650 with no compression to capture hi8 footage but the interlacing is terrible
I use to have a miro dc30+ that would capture with very little interlacing from hi8 or any other source-I no longer have access to it and it wouldn't run under XP anyway
my canon elura 80 camcorder has an analog to digital convertor I am thinking of doing this and just transfering everything in DV format.

Believe it or not, interlacing can be a good thing. If you used a capture device that created non-interlaced captures from a hi8 or vcr source, it was most likely throwing out half of the picture detail by dropping one of the interlace fields. You can either use a tool like virtualdub to filter out the interlacing in the video file, or use a computer video player that does the same. If you're planning on making DVD's of the captured footage, it's best to leave it interlaced. When played on either a TV or computer it will look just fine.

Do you use ATI Multimedia Center or Catalys Medias Center? In MMC create a new record type, and since you are using hi8 it was probably captured at 29.97 fps and resolution at 720x480, so that is what you should have the Theater 650 to capture at. Also select de-interlacing to keep it from capturing any interlaced frames, if it was captured at 23.97 fps you shouldn't have any interlaced frames to begin with.
For CMC I have no idea how to adjust the capture settings.

  4. I am using virtualdub for capturing,no compression
I think the bitrate is like 29MBps no droped frames
    the interlacing is just horrible
ATI multimedia center is for ATI's Radeon and All-in-Wonder products not tv wonder

  6. Interlaced is the normal state of standard definition video. If your final product is DVD you should capture interlaced and burn an interlaced DVD. Just ignore the interlace artifacts while editing.

Capturing from your DV camcorder will give you interlaced video too. Microsoft's DV codec and WMP may detinterlace on the fly during playback to hide it.

If you're final product is a video that is only viewed on a computer then deinterlacing may be the appropriate remedy.
