I hope this is a correct forum for my question below:
I have a USB Turntable that I use for dumping vinyls to a CD. My Front USB ports do not work well with the turntable, as stated by the manufacturer. He suggest using rear ports. I would like to connect to a rear port and leave the other end unconnected (turntable end.) It will be connected only on a as needs basis to the turntable. Is any harm done by leaving the connection to the turntable broken, and the other end in a rear port, while using the computer for other activities?

If it's unconnected, it's unconnected. Leaving a cable plugged in with either nothing on it or something on it that is switched off is the same as having nothing plugged in. It won't harm anything.
My case doesn't have front ports (elderly case, but I like it) so I leave a male to female cable plugged into one of the rear ports and dangling around the front. That way when I want to connect a memory stick, my digital camera or external hard drive, I don't have to crawl around behind the computer.
