Are there any good freeware programs that will correct my registry and restore it to new condition? If not wich payware programs do you recommend? Thank you for your help and time.

Registry cleaners can also clean out registry entries that are required for some apps to work correctly ..... be sure to backup the registry before allowing any cleaners to delete stuff and monitor what is actually being deleted.

Personally i wouldn't use a reg cleaner app as i've tried several in the past and find that they do delete a lot of needed entries ... after using these apps you spend so much time fixing entries that were deleted but needed that its probably quicker to do a fresh install of windows and programs etc

  6. Also mention what kind of computer you have & what OS.

After using a cleaner use a registry defragger too.

I'm getting an error message each time I reboot (or cold-start) my system. A dialog comes up saying that my registry was damaged and it had to use a backup or alternate file (registry backup?). No other issues or problems but the dialog is always there upon boot. I tried the Eusing app and it did find about 160 "issues" which id claimed to fix. However, the same dialog comes up upon reboot. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Yes, you probably have something really bad going on - either a virus, spyware, corrupted files, bad hard drive - possibly any of these issues. Get your data, IE or Firefox bookmarks, E-mail, "My Documents" folders, serial numbers, etc - burned onto a DVD for backup and re-install Windows from scratch.

RegSeeker seems to be an excellent free program. But your problem could be more than any registry cleaner can fix.

rumplestiltskin, I would be a little suspicious about that error message, unless you are sure it is from your OS. Some adware programs have a similar popup. But they usually have a sales pitch to go along with the 'error' message.

The registry is really the 'heart' of your OS. If it's messed up, I would consider a clean reinstall of the OS. BTW, where is the backup registry coming from? Did you make a BU or did one of your software programs create one? I didn't think that the XP OS had that function automatically? But if the BU registry still shows the same error, then it's not much help anyway.

I would agree with the others to backup your important files, as the problem may get worse.

Most registry cleaners will find a bunch of problem files, even on a computer that has no problems. Most are just lost files or links from deleted programs. Too many may slow things down, but no reason for major panic. I would try to examine each problem found before I delete it, to try to prevent damaging the registry further.

Luckily, my XP Pro installation (under Parallels) is simply to run Access (as I teach it in a local college). Probably easiest to trash the hard drive "container" and install anew. Then I'll backup a copy of the "container" file so, if this ever happens again, all I need to do is copy the container file from the backup drive.

Thanks, everyone, for your valued advice.
