problem: how to convert audio files of window media so i can play

i downloaded a avi files this is encoded in this.

bitrate : 64kbps
audio sample size 16bit
audio format: windows media audio V2

video:
framew rate: 29 frams/seconds
data rate: 121 kbps
video sample size 24 bit
video compression Divx

this is the propteries of the files. i need to know how i can play it. i do have divx and it still dont play.
or how to convert so i can play them. the main problem is the audio format of windows media audio V2 how to comvert into mpeg layer -3, as the other files of same series have the same things only the audio format and bitrate is different.

It should play in WMP, otherwise try VLC.

I've been using GOM player lately. It doesn't have quite as many options as VLC, but plays most files on it's own like VLC and I like the interface better.

i only use wmp and none others.

so is they a way to convert the audio of it to more suitable audio.
did tried virtual dub no luck

Which version of WMP ?
Have you tried installing the Windows codecs from Microsoft ?
What happened when you tried to convert with virtualdub ?

i have the new wmp 11, it didnt even work in wmp 10,
i just check in the classic version it did played but without sound.

i need to convert plz help in convertation from the windows media V2 to mpeg layer 3.
i tried through virtual dub it is saying it dont have a the way to convert since not having the codec of it

From the list under Select Downloads, choose Codecs Installation Packages

Install Codecs Installation Package for Windows Media Video 9 VCM (last item on the page) and see if it allows you to play, or open the file in virtualdubmod.

the codec u suggest did not worked.
i tried the nimo pack but install only the audio and it worked.
so i am converting from virtual dub they when the file is converted this is what it saying

the audio codec reported and error while decompressing the audio data.
error code: 512 (ACMERR_NOTPOSSIBLE)

Either ask those who provided those avi's to you or find a suitable decoder.

Exactly what G-Spot does, but with your suggestion provides less information. Also, G-spot doesn't need VB6 runtimes installed. You can also try mediaInfo and any number of others. G-Spot is reliable and handles mpeg-2 video as well.

GSpot is great tool, but I do not think that it gives you an option to connect to the codec's download site and install the missing codec automatically, which this one does. I do not think that GSpot reports which codecs are missing, rather it shows which are installed and is there any problem with those.

g-spot tells you which codecs are used by the file, and if you have them installed or not. That is all I need to know.

a greecodec i have tried it did not find the missing window media V2.

i can now play the files once i installed full version of K Lite the new one. with full installed exopect the classsic player.
it works but still cant convert using virtual dub into other audio version since it give the same error when it is almost complete.
and when remove the codec it play upside down.

Then I believe this is surely illegal and Mats is going to close this thread, so no use of lingering this discussion any further.

Though not all torrent movies are copyrighted [like some of Kurosawa made before either 1950 or 53 according tot he ruling of Japanese High court], but I think this one is.
