Im trying to merge some .srt subtitles with an Xvid avi file. Im using mencoder dev-CVS-060307-04:23-4.0.1, that were from ffmpegXbinaries20060307

    The command I'm using is
    Code:
    ./mencoder target.avi -alang jpn -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=900:chroma_opt:vhq=4:bvhq=1:quant_type=mpeg -oac mp3lame -sub subs.srt -font ~/.mplayer/font/font-arial-24-iso-8859-1/font.desc -subpos 90 -o filename.avi
The problem is, no matter what settings i use for -font or using -sub-font-scale the subtitles all look the same, and their all too small. Using the same subtitle settings in mplayer give good sized subtitles, but when I go through mencoder I get the same small ones everytime.

The same thing happens in ffmpegX, when i go to add the subtitles and hit preview they show up how I want them to, but after encoding them they go back to being small again.

Is there someway I can force it to use a different size other then the default? Or is there another tool I can use for Mac, either natively or from darwinports or fink. Id rather not have to go through autogk in Parallels since its a big pain.

-subfont-autoscale, -subfont-text-scale, etc. only work for truetype fonts.

Still not sure I would recommend mencoder for hard subbing. Last I checked libass wasn't working and you often end up with partially transparent subs.

But Arial is a true type font, no? I copied an arial.ttf from a Windows machine and renamed it to subfont.ttf in ~/.mplayer/
Should I copy it again and name it arial.ttf?
And if you dont recommend mencoder for hardsubbing on a mac, then what would you recommend?

    You are loading font-arial-24-iso-8859-1/font.desc though.

It doesnt matter if I load that or subfont.tff, they both look the same and same size no matter what options I put. When I load the font-arial-24-iso-8859-1/font.desc in mplayer its fine though, just not in mencoder.

Well I can tell you that at least under windows mencoder will ignore loading ttf's and instead use the default font.desc if available. Delete/rename it and it will load the specified font. mplayer on the other hand will load the font specified in the config file or on the command line.

Awesome, I dont know why I never thought of that, I just thought I was doing something wrong, not that it was ignoring font options cause it was loading a default.
I always assumed that the default font would be in ~/.mplayer and since there wasnt anything there I thought it was a command issue, but after looking a bit its in /usr/local/share/mplayer instead, replaced the tiny default font with the right size one and its good now.
    Thanks.
