I have just got and installed my new Samsung SH S182D writer and have the jumper set to Slave??, but it is not recognised in Device manager.
Does any one know where I can check the jumper settings for this drive in case I have it wrongly selected?

    Thanks

  2. Set the burner to master. If you have another drive, set it to slave. The IDE cables usually say master, top drive, and slave, bottom drive.

  4. The jumper is in the back of the drive.

There should be a little diagram printed or engraved on the top or rear of the writer somewhere showing the correct jumper setting for slave. If you can't see it, have a look at the Samsung website and see if that has a picture.
It sounds like you have the IDE set up correctly, i.e. hard drive set as Master, DVD writer set as Slave It might be worthwhile making sure the hard disk really is set to Master.

If you happen to have Nero Info Tool on you computer, it will tell which drives are Slave and Master, along with telling you if the drive is set to DMA mode and also some other useful information. Check in the 'Configuration' tab. If you don't have it, it's available here free: http://www.nero.com/nero6/eng/Info_Tool.html

However, if Windows is not seeing it, there are a couple of possibilities. First is the cable is bad or loose, or maybe your BIOS needs to be set to recognize it. You could boot into BIOS and see if it's listed there. If it's a new drive where none has been before, BIOS may have detection turned off. You might also reboot a couple of times to see if the BIOS is just taking a while to find it.

Thanks for all the replies; I have it sorted now. It was down to incorrect jumper setting and a possible loose IDE cable, but its seen ok now in BIOS and windows
