    Hi,

I have recently upgraded to Windows Vista and I am having problems getting Virtualdub to load files. WHen I load the xxx.avs file into Virtualdub it gives an error "Avisynth open failure MPEG2Source could not open file". I even tried using VFAPI converter toconvert the d2v file to a vfapi.avi file that can be loaded direct into Virtualdub but it gives "Couldn't locate desompressor for format 'vifp' and says it requires a vfw codec to be installed. I have these codec installed.

Both these methods worked fine for me on my old Windows 2000 system. Is there something wrong with Virtualdub in Vista ?

I am using the latest stable version of Virtualdub (1.6.17)

  2. Which version of Vista (Home Premium etc) and 32-bit or 64-bit?

  3. For almost all Vista related problems there is a very easy solution. Find some old Windows XP installation disc, insert it into a cd/dvd drive, reboot the computer, and install XP over Vista. And VDub will work again.

Seriously, I tried Vista, and removed it after few days, because A LOT of programs don't work, on both 32 or 64 bit versions.

    Hardly helpful advice.

People are successfully using VirtualDub with Vista.

The specific issues with MPEG2 may have to do with the version (some don't ship with an MPEG2 decoder) and VfW issues may have to do with 32-bit vs 64-bit.

Thanks for the replies. I am using Home Basic (but might upgrade to Home Premium soon) and it is 32 bit. I think I have mpeg2 codecs in place as I can play mpeg2 files in WMP.

  6. VirtualDub doesn't open MPEG2 files period. You need VirtualDubMPEG2 or VirtualDubMod. Or you could install AVISynth and DGIndex then frameserve from AVISynth to VirtualDub (I don't know for certain that this will work with Vista though).

No I can't play the avs script filein WMP. I just get the normal screen with the same error message as above in it "mpeg2source could not open file"

  9. Can you post an example avs file?

Vista changes the names of a lot of directories (e.g., Documents and Settings). Since you said you upgraded (rather than a clean install) maybe some of the paths in the script items need amending.

Just a hunch - I'm wholly ignorant of the content of such things!

Sorry, I missed that. Maybe he's opening the MPG file not the D2V file from DGIndex.

The avs file is a very simple one. Here is a copy. The file is stored in D:\Temp. The only line in the avs file is 'MPEG2Source("D:\Temp\video.d2v")' so the paths etc are not the fault. As for loading d2v files as I understand it that is not possible in Virtualdub, that is why they need to be served in avisynth.
