Would like your suggestions for any inexpensive drive for ripping to hard drive only. In particular one which will read and rip problem discs with minor scratches would be preferred. Thank you very much for your suggestions. Also include where to buy your suggestion if you do not mind. Have a great day.
    Thank You,

How inexpensive are you looking for? Burners are now about $30 at many online outlets.

In my opinion, the only way to buy a DVD-ROM is, in person, on a clearance table, because the shipping costs bring the cost over the value.

Dvd burners are so cheap now. I'd suggest buying a dvd burner since the prices are inexpensive. Get a LITEON 18x or 20x spd dvd burner which can rip at 16x spd for single layer media & 10x spd for dual layer media.

If you really insist on getting a dvdrom check out Ebay. I've gotten most of my LITEON 167T & TOSHIBA 1612/1712 dvdroms from Ebay.

The last few comparisons I've seen, all of the major manufacturer drives perform about equal. So it boils down to brand preference or price.

Hasn't it been said more than once that burners don't make good rippers? I've always had a DVD-ROM drive for reading and ripping and a burner for burning. For ripping, either Liteon or Asus. I recently had a scatched disc and found that the Asus DVD-ROM drive ripped it with less errors than a Pioneer burner.

Richard_G, I agree with you, that is why I ask for DVD Rom recommendations for "ripping only", still unsure what to buy for ripping at this point. I have a Pioneer 111L which I am quite happy with for burning but both my Plextor 708 and Pioneer DVD ROM are starting to give ripping errors, just worn out I think.

The Asus I currently have seems pretty good but normally I use Liteon and have never had any problems with them. Most people I've seen recommend them too. They seem to be pretty universally available, so just see what you can find in your area.

There is also a big differnce in ripping between brands/models. I have an older Pacific Digital (rebadged Lite-On) burner, that I use for all troublesome discs. It doesn't RIP as quickly as my newer NEC or Pioneer drives, but it can read discs the others cannot. I also have an old Hitachi dvdrom and a Lite-On dvdrom, but they aren't any better with problem discs than my newer burners.

Anyway, without knowing the exact make and model of a known good "ripping" drive and then being able to test it against the new drives, it is all a matter preference and opinion.

Welx! If you're going with a LITEON, I'd strongly suggest getting a dvd burner. The dvdrom & dvd burner read spd are both the same. To pay about $10.00 more for a dvd burner with the same read spd as a dvdrom is worth it.

I agree, I'd go with the DVD burner over the DVD-ROM, all day! The LITEON burners are known to be great rippers.
