  1. I'm looking to buy an inexpensive stand-alone DivX DVD player in the USA - and Philips looks to have nice solutions. But there are so many models! I went to Amazon and found DVP642, DVP 3960 / 3140 / 3050, DVP 5982 / 5960 / 5900 / 5140 all available now. I searched through this forum so see if anybody has done a recent simple comparison - but nothing. Can anybody give a good summary of the different models - which ones are new and old, which chip sets, good & bad features, and best buys - as of March 2007?

  2. Hi Sprag,

I would NOT buy a Philips!!!

I have DVP5960/37 and have not been able to play AVI's with packed bitstream ...

I have called and called Philips support and they are IDIOTS ... either they have "No Clue" what I am saying or simply Don't give a "Hoot".

Also, Philips of Firmware support Stinks Major ...

Look for something else and pay few dollars more ... if you don't want to have a miserable life dealing with this crappy player.

  3. Philips 5960 with hacked firmware supports packed bitstream and long filenames on DVD.

    The 642 is really outdated.

  4. Hi Sprag,

You might want to look for other discussion points ... for example see below before making up your mind on 5960/37 or 5960/12 ...
