Hi Everybody, I'm a newcomer...I have a problem that I tried a lots of way to fix it but I am not successful..Everybody can help me please...
I'm using WinXp sp2. My computer has two Optical storages: DVD Combo BenQ and DVDRW Sony DRU-830A...But their speed about reading and writing are very slow specially on Sony DVDRW (only about 1X although I set to write Discs at 8X or 16X speed),1 hour to burn a DVD 4.3 GB data with speed at 8X ......Although I searched ways to fix them on Internet, read a lots of document but it's still not successful...I set Transfer Mode in Device manager from PIO MOde to DMA mode, I changed jumper from Slave to Master and versus...Even though I edited in registry but they are not effect...When I restart Computer they don't change, still be PIO Mode..When I set "DMA if available",uninstall their drivers in "IDe ATA/Atapi Controller", restart computer ...sometimes in OS, their mode is DMA but When I inserted a Disc to Read,Write, they converted to PIo Mode again...When I use Nero to benchmark their Speed about reading or writing..They converted to PIO mode, and speed on software's benchmark are only about 1.2X, very slow......
I updated firmware that is last version...SS23 for Sony....
Everybody can help me about this problem ?? Thanks very much.....

I had the same problem on one of my dvd writers, the speed to record only showed 1x. you need to clean your lens on the writer and try it, it worked for me.

Get a lens cleaner CD, these are usually very inexpensive.

Windows automatically sets the IDE to PIO mode when its detects a certain amout of errors from your DVD drives. Try each drive on its own set to master, to check if there's a conflict between them.

Do you have a HDD sharing the same channel ? I was having similar, if less frequent issues and the problem turned out to be the HDD, not the optical drive. The HDD was on the way out anyway, so I replaced it and have never had the issue again.

Does the mobo/BIOS even support UDMA4 for optical drives?
