  1. It doesn't really matter if I'm using IE or Firefox this has been happening since I got a computer and started saving files to my computer. Is there a simple fix or any fix at all? I currently have 2 GB of ram and it just doesn't help. TIA

Yes, I've seen that problem before. There's a registry tweak for it IIRC. I'll check around.

Are you on a network, or does that machine travel to work and back ? I think it is doing a search for available drives and it delays because it doesn't see some drive letter or network resource that was there before.

    Try this:

Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options
    goto the View tab
At the top under "Files and Folders" uncheck "automatically search for network folders and printers"

  4. No I am not on a network. It doesn't happen with every file save but most.

Have you defragmented your disks recently?

Is the drive you are saving to greater than 75% full - if so you may be in need of cleanup and defragmentation.

Any chance your antivirus is taking over the system? Perform your download with the task manager running and see where the processor is going when the browser freezes. The fact that your problem happend with both browsers suggests that something else is the cause.

There can also be a pause if the folder you are saving to has a large number of files in it.

Usually about the time my download folder has 1000+ files, there is a pause when opening the "save to" box.
