I tried using Mactheripper to rip The Prestige but it came up after it finished saying that the file has bad sectors and I should check the file before burning it to a dvd-r. I figured it was just a bad disc so i rented a different copy and tried it again but the same message appeared. What do I do? I don't even know how to check the file before burning to check for any bad sectors.

There is a new donationware version of MTR available at ripdifferent.com forums.
It has beaten the worst of the worst. One form of copy protection is to mechanically damage the edge of the disc after pressing, so if you don't have software that can read and rebuild the navigation packs it will hang up by trying to rip sectors that cannot be read. -
The Prestige is "protected" by Macrovision's RipGuard. Their description of the technology is downright hilarious. Anyway using version 2.6.6 of MacTheRipper and version 1.4.2 of DVD2OneX I was able to rip my copy of the movie. The output of MacTheRipper was not playable in Apple's DVD Player.app. However after processing those files through DVD2OneX and removing the zero byte cells, the movie plays perfectly. Total time expenditure: about 30 minutes.
What's really funny to me is that these applications are years older than the relatively recent development of RipGuard. Macrovision trumpets RipGuard as being totally new and completely undefeatable...talk about snake oil!
