Thursday night/Friday morning I used Fairuse Wizard to convert a DVD into a .avi file. The process was almost intuitive. In fact maybe it was, because in trying to following the steps outlined in the guide for this tool, it seems the the program skipped steps-even though I am nearly 100% certain that I did nothing to cause this to happen. The steps that appeared to have skipped include what parts of the DVD to be converted, and, resolution.

Now the finished product-which was still in wide screen, was recognized by TMPGEncoder PLus, so I was able to convert the .avi file into an .mpg fullscreen file. And, sampling both the .avi, and, the .mpg files the audio seemed to be in sync. But I'm still wondering why Fairuse Wizard appeared to be skipping some of the steps outlined in the guide. Is it possible that is because, in order to try this program, I used a "back up" of a DVD I had made previously, by just fully backing up the DVD on to a DVD blank. Or, if that had nothing to do with Fairuse Wizard seeming skipping steps, why this happened.

Administrators, and, members who have thoughts/answers to this question please respond, and, I thank those who do respond in advance.

May I ask why you converted the avi to mpg? It would be a lot simpler to simply rip the dvd and use vob2mpg to get a useable mpg file. Since the dvd is already in dvd format you don't need to reencode it.

Now is this simply a test? Why did you need the avi in the first place if you converted it to mpg?

I'm just trying to help find you an easier path, not to criticise you or anything. Just curious.

EDIT - oh so you wanted to go from widescreen to fullscreen? You should still be able to skip the avi stage. Just use vob2mpg, get a useable mpg file then load that straight into tmpgenc. It should be a lot easier that way. Correct me if I'm wrong on my assesment of your project.

Druid-next time I use fairuse wizard, I'll check to see if that is the case. I presume that option would in settings.
Yoda-vob2mpg from what I read of the description/comments at tools here at videohelp, seems like an easy tool to use, (otherwise someone would have written a guide to it's use, I would presume,) but some commenters say it uses to much of a computer's resources in order to do it's job. Presuming a can configure fairuse wizard to convert the DVD file from widescreen to fullscreen, as the guide seems to suggest I can, when it converts to .avi, I won't have to convert the resolution by loading the result from fairuse wizard into TMPGEncoder. I can just use my burning programs to make a DVD of the converted resolution
    file.
