I've been using Fairuse Wizard 2.8 to convert my DVD library to MKV (H.264/AC3 5.1).

I have it installed on 3PCs, all on a clean install, all with the same version of everything (ffdshow, X264, etc).

For some strange and odd reason, Fairuse works perfectly on my two desktops (Intel E6850 3.0Ghz & AMD 4400+). However, it does not work on my laptop (Vaio Intel P8400 2.26Ghz). The encoding process (1st & 2nd pass) run perfectly. However, when it gets to the file output process, it hangs 70% of the way on the "The output file is being written..." screen. The "minutes remaining" just continues to grow endlessly until I cancel the process. I've re-imaged the machine again, and I still get same problem.

    Any ideas?

  2. All computers have same OS?

Is laptop overheating? Check temps, clean your vents

Amount of free disk space on the laptop? Memory configuration / page file configuration?

Other concurrent processes on the laptop? (e.g. antivirus/antispyware) Check task manager

All computers have Vista Ultimate SP1.

Laptop doesn't seem to be overheating. It's only a one month old Sony Vaio VGN-FW139E.

There is at least 40Gig free on both C drive and video partition.

I rebuilt the laptop last night, so it's completely barbone (software wise) without any AV/Firewall or any other processed running in the background.

I'm trying it now with the AVI container instead of MKV to see if that makes a difference. I'll report back.

With AVI, exactly same settings as before (codec, audio), it worked without a problem.

I did just notice that my Haali Media Splitter version is the latest on the laptop, whereas it's an older version on my desktop where it has no problems creating MKV. That couldn't be it, could it?

I had this exact same problem - it drove me nuts! I eventually decided that it had something to do with the xVid codec or Fairuse Wizard's use of it. When I switched to x264 everything works fine and has done for some time.

It absolutely could be it. Sounds like a bug. I'd suggest installingl the older version of haali on the laptop if you absolutely have to use it.

This kind of thing is why, when I used windows 7 more, I yanked all that stuff, used codec tweak tool to repoint everything back to standard microsoft filters etc, and just used media programs that don't need any external codecs/filters. And I haven't had any loss in performance or file compatibility problems doing it that way.
