Hi. I've been having problems lately converting avi's to dvd format and then burning to disc. I'm starting to wonder if It's my burner that's the problem.

But here's what I'm doing. The avi's play properly on my computer. I then use VSO ConvertXtoDVD version 2.1.12.214 to convert the avi's to dvd format. After that I use nero version 6.6.0.16 to burn the dvd files on to DVD's. I'm using Maxell brand DVD-R's.

All my movies glitch and freeze at the end of the movies. Can someone help me? I don't know what's going on.

Most people here suspect bad discs at the edges when you have problems at the end of a movie. It will be on the outer edge where you can have some problems.

Try to not encode to a full disc. Set your target for 4gb instead of a full single layer dvd. That way you can avoid the edge and should clear it up. You'll have to sacrifice a teeny bit of quality this way by using a smaller bitrate but the few hundred megabytes shouldn't be too much of a hit on your final product.

The only other suggestion would be to try a different set of blank dvds. Taiyo Yuden are considered to be the best by the majority of users on this website.

When a DVD has problems at the end of the video, that usually points to the media. The end of a DVD is at the outer edge of the disc. Some discs have the most problems there.

So usually you have two options. Either shorten your videos so they don't burn to the edge of the disc or change your media to one that has less problems in that area. The only fault I find with this is if you convert the average 700MB Xvid with ConvertX it usually only takes up a Gigabyte or two. Not near the edge of a 4.37GB disc. But if you are approaching 4.37GB with your burn, then it goes back to the media.

It could be a burner problem, but unless it's overheating during the burn, that's not the usual cause.

One change I would try is to use ImgBurn. It generally works better than Nero for DVD burning. Probably won't help with your problem, though. ImgBurn can burn VIDEO_TS folders by using 'Build' under the 'Mode' header.

My converted 700 mb movies come out to 4 gigs because I have it set to High quality/slow encode setting. Should I try setting it to medium encode speed? I understand now what you guys are saying. It might just be the outer edge of the cd. The movie usually freezes at the last 5-10 mins of the movie.

i used to have problems like that

and i set convertX for a custom DISC size, 3900meg

this keeps me off the edge of the disc, it is also set for high quality slow encode, but the custom size limits the finished size

I do the same thing with DVD shrink, I do a custom shrink on the main movie and move the slider untill the total used is under 4000, again this keeps the files back from the edge

I use good media and never have a problem with the edge of the disc. I generally use as much space as I can.

Good media is usually the best cure, but changing the size of the burn like theewizard suggests should work for now. I used to do the same thing with DVDShrink, but now I use TY media, so no problems anymore. The name on the disc is not always a assurance of quality. Check out lordsmurf's site for some good information on disc quality: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

If you look at the burned surface near the outer edge on a problem disc, you may even be able to see some surface problems. Usually you can lower the size by a couple of hundred MB and you will not likely to be able to notice any quality loss in the shorter disc. I usually set Shrink at 4200, while the default is 4464MB.

BTW, if you are converting a 700MB Xvid to DVD, there's a limit on the quality anyway, probably at about the 2GB size unless you have a unusually high quality Xvid. But if you only put one video per disc, you might as well use a little more of the disc.

Ok so I think I'm going to have to change media. The reason I am using Maxell and not memorex is because my dvd burner is a 8x speed and memorex doesn't sell 8x speed discs no more. The reason I can't use their discs is because my firmware isn't updated. Can someone help on updating my firmware? I'm afraid of damaging the burner if I do it myself.

setting the file size to convert to 3900gb did the trick. It doesn't freeze at the end anymore. Thanks!
