  1. ok i got a new power mac w/ dvd writer at work-
i've always been a pc user- so i'm pretty lame on macs.

anyways, i have a bunch fight clips that are mpegs, avi that i think are encoded w/ some divx codecs.

anyways i just want to compile them and put them on dvd or vcd so i can watch them at home on a tv instead of a computer.

so i'm wondering so how can i get it to work.
    what software i need?
can i do what i want to do w/ apple's i dvd or i movie program?
or just how do i go about doing this.

    thanks

  2. If you want to make a DVD then iDVD is the easiest and cheapest way to go. But it only allows quicktime movies as source material (no AVI nor MPG), so you will need to convert your stuff first:

For the divx AVI video you should first install the divx codec available in alpha version for mac OSX and OS9 on www.divx.com. For OSX the divx.jamby.net quicktime component is still faster. Then use the OSX DivosX Tool (look for it on VersionTracker.com) to quickly extract the audio as an mp3 file, which you will open in another quicktime window, copy it and paste scaled to the AVI video window. Then deactivate the 1st audio track with the appropriate Quicktime player command. Save as Quicktime movie 'with dependancies'. You should be able to drop that file on iDVD and have it converted to DVD in some hours. I don't checked but it should work.

For MPG1 video sources, it will probably be cheaper to burn them as VideoCD. If you want badly to export them into a DVD then you will need to convert them into Quicktime first, by using the Export command in Quicktime player. The audio will not get converted so you will need to demux it from the source MPG1 and then paste it back to the converted file. To demux a MPG system stream you can use the mpgtx package on OSX which should be available through fink. There is also an OS9 version here http://www.biermann.org/philipp/mpegcut/mpgtx-0.8b-0.6b.ppc.sit - use the command mpgtx -d movie.mpg

If you instead want to make VCDs, the same apply, though you will simply drop your files on Roxio Toast Titanium's VCD window. If the file is an MPG1, VCD-compliant stream then it will burn it right away. Otherwise it will automatically convert it in some hours and then burn.
