  1. I've got some TV capture file with MPEG1 encoding and MPEG audio and subtitle. It plays fine in MPC.

I would like to convert it to AVI file using DivX or xVID. I tried with VirtualDub. However, when it opens the file, there are a lot of errors like the following:

[!] MPEG: Anachronistic or discontinuous timestamp found in video stream 0 at
byte position 38241778, from 10087077 to 10177167. This may indicate an
    improper join.

When I view the video in VirtualDub, the A/V looks in sync. However, once I drag the timeline, it goes out of sync.

Since it plays fine in MPC, is there any way to correct this problem? Or I can simply go ahead to encode it without any trouble? What if I want to delete the commercial in the middle?

I do have enough disk space.

    thanks!

have you tried repair the mpeg1 file? run it through videoredo or try remux with tmpgenc(file->mpeg tools) or mpeg corrector.

  3. Following tried:

MPEG corrector: does not do much good

TMPGEnc Tool: does not do much, reported some error at the end. Resulting file is still out of sync toward the end.

VideoRedo: tried the trial. It only save 15min and it seems to be OK. I am hesitating to register.

    Any other options?

    Thanks!

I have seen that error message on files that were cut with cuttermaran. The original had timestamps and since cuttermaran does not re-encode the timestamps weren't altered when sections are removed (like commercials). I've never had any problems using them as-is for any purpose (such as authoring to DVD), but I don't use DIVX/XVID so I can't tell you if it will work or not, but it won't hurt to go ahead and try.
