  1. I want a simple USB audio/video capture device to record VHS tapes to my computer.

I would like to be able to use the Capturing feature of VirtualDub, or another capturing program if I see fit. (I don't wanna be locked into one program, Like I am on my Creative Video Blaster Digital VCR PCI Card).

    I was looking at: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_techspecs_full.php/masterid=2237772
but I really have NO idea.

    Please recommend some.

I'm on XP Pro, with 3.4ghz Pentium 4. 1gb RAM. 140gb Hard Drive.

I can recommend the Pinnacle Dazzle Platinum Device (DVC-170). It's a small external package that connects to a USB2 port. You feed it either composite video (three RCA connectors = video plus R/L audio) or a S-VHS. It does hardware encoding directly to mpeg2 (720x480 at bitrates you set ranging from 8 Mbps down). Hardware encoding means it doesn't load down your processor. I have a 3 GHz P4 and it uses less than 25% of the processor when capturing. You will probably have to use the included Pinnacle software to do the capturing, but once you have the mpeg2 file you can use whatever you want, and the Pinnacle installation doesn't seem to interfere with my other video software. I think it's about $80.
