Yes, you must transcode / convert them if you want it as a DVD-Video that works on DVD Players.

You can just burn them as a data dvd but they will only work on divx dvd players....if the avi clips are in divx or xvid then.

clarky man, I do this all the time and I have found (although it takes more time) that using sony vegas I encode each video using a variable bit rate 2 pass encode 8max 6avg 192,000min 720x576 (i believe it 720x480 if your ntsc) video only, then I encode the audio as AC3 so I end up with 2 files, the video and the audio (make sure they have the exact same name and just the extention is different i.e. u2 - desire.mpeg and u2 - desire.ac3.

Next you load up sony dvd architect and load the videos into there and it will automatically select the AC3 file as the audio when set to AC3 mode in the preferences. There is no more transcoding here as all the settings were done correct from vegas and you just organise your vids and then burn.

I get around 25 videos per DVD using this method.

Before I encoded them individually I used to use a more basic program called roxio easy dvd creator which would encode them all using constant bit rates giving me about 12 for each disc. This program was easier in that you just plonk your vid in and it is the authoring and encoding program all in one but doesnt have many options in how you can encode your vids.

The first option gives me great results.

    ConvertXtoDvd

All in one, convert's pretty much any file type to dvd, with or without menu, and will even burn to dvd.
I usually use it just for converting then burn the resulting VIDEO_TS folder with ImgBurn.
