If it is the installer telling you that, you have no option if you want to install the product.

EDIT - Their website does confirm that their products are all .NET, so, yes, you need it.

    However....

You may want to contact the developer and ask if the software really does use .NET.

Recently, we updated one of our programs. Just a simple recompile and package. You'd think.

Well, after releasing it and putting on our server, I happened to need to download it onto an unfamiliar PC. I was stunned when the installer said that .NET Framework 2.0 is required. Our product makes absolutely no use of that technology. At 25+ MB, it's rather a lot to download for no reason.

After digging around, I found out the problem. The latest set of Microsoft's development tools (Visual Studio .NET 2005) contains an installer maker (as do earlier versions). For some reason, the installer project got tagged as needing the .NET Framework 2.0. The thing is, if you uncheck the box that causes it, the information doesn't get taken out of the project. i.e., you think you have removed the dependancy but it is still there. You have to use Notepad to edit the installer project file!!

I can confirm that it does indeed need the .Net Framework...

  5. I haven't run into any problems with it and, with the testing I had to do, I have repeatedly installed and uninstalled it from the same machine. It can be removed via Add/Remove Programs.

JohnnyMalaria - I know you're running Vista - Is .net framework now included with/integral part of the OS?

I'm not sure. Since my Vista has Visual Studio .NET, the .NET SDK etc, the framework (2.0) is on there.

Reading on the Microsoft website, all the downloadable redistributables list Vista as one of the supported OSes. I would have expected them to state that a given version is already included if that were the case.

  9. The problem is that Framework are not backward compatible.

Ie: a program written in .Net 1 cannot run with only .Net framework 2 installed. You need to install Framework 1

So for now, to be sure, you must have Framework 1,2 and soon 3.

Very bad solution. Would have been a lot better is framework 3 can run version 1 and 2

...but an app written for 1.0 can be compiled for 2.0 (and run with only Framework 2.0 installed) without any alterations.
I'm surprised it's not included with the OS install.

FWIW, Vegas requires .Net be installed, and it edits quite happily.

    I found this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_new_to_Windows_Vista#.NET_Framework_3.0

Windows Vista is the first client version of Windows to ship with the .NET Framework. Specifically, it includes .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 (previously known as WinFX) but not version 1.0 or 1.1.[citation needed] The .NET Framework is a set of managed code APIs that is slated to succeed Win32. The Win32 API will still be present in Windows Vista, but will not give direct access to all the new functionality introduced with the .NET Framework.

Ah. Sounds like what I'd expect. Got a batch of 10 licenses here at work, so I'll soon get a "hands on" experience...

Yes and NO ... there where alot of change's made between the package's that meant some program's would need their code completely updated in order to work properly ... some from almost complete scratch because of the difference's involved and security addition's ... and it is because of this issue that these tool's writen in previous version's where not updated by the creator's .

I still have a tool that requires .net 1.1490 ... if .net 2 is in system , forget getting this tool up and running ever .
