  1. I have about 2 dozen home made vhs tapes I would like to capture, then I will be done with all vcr's and tapes. I can't afford to buy a new VCR. I have read about a couple of older JVC models and a Mitsubishi model that has some kind of image stabalizer built in.

Any recommendation of Make/Model of VCR that would help with older tapes would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

A TBC is always a good idea with tape capture

  4. Get one that can do tracking. Some have auto tracking.

I have a 6-head Toshiba W-704 that does surprisingly well with old tapes. Better than a newer JVC 40k DVHS VCR that has in-line TBC (probably not quite as good as external TBC).

    All the best!

  6. As always deferring to Lordsmurf, I have over 600 tapes to convert to dvd, and my experience in the 100 or so done so far?

When you place the tape in the vcr and try to capture it is when you know how good it is, I have 6 vcr's as I find some tapes do better in some vcr's than others. Start with a jvc with tbc/dnr and then sharp or toshiba with 19 micron heads so they track slp tapes better.

  7. a follow up

I was having a terrible time getting a good capture from a vhs.

Used jvc 9911 vcr to jvc m100 dvd recorder with and without tbc, both gave grainy picture.(Cost about C$500)

Used Sharp vcr with 19 micron head into a RJ Tech dvd recorder ( Also has lsi chip), much better.(Cost about C$180)

Set the picture control in the Jvc 9911 to "soft" and you wont have any grain.

  9. Certainly improves and thanks for helping, but it still seems that for some tapes the cheaperr alternatives can work well.
