    Hello all,

It's been ages since i've done anything with video. Slowly i'm getting back into it and had a simple question. I'm used to downloading various .AVI files around 700MBs in size, decoding them, burning them to DVD and voila, I can watch the movie no problem. However I noticed my new DVD player (inexpensive and so far so good, the Samsung DVD-HD860) says it can read DivX right off the bat without any encoding. I though this was great so I just tried burning a straight DivX .AVI (at least thats what the site said) using Nero's burning ROM, right onto a DVD. I do that, put it in the DVD player, and voila, nothing. What can I do to make this work, i'm really not sure as this is the first time I try this approach?

    Thanks in advance!

I use NERO EXPRESS and burn to a CD-R or to a DVD-R as a DATA DISC. That should work but not all DivX/XviD files are compatible with stand alone players.

However most stand alone players will give you an error of some sort assuming you have correctly burned the file to a CD or DVD disc.

I usually use Prassi ONES, but have also happily used ImgBurn 2 to create data discs. Both play equally as well.

You should look at the specs for your player to find out what restrictions it has on the encoding that can be used (there will be some), then use Mpeg4Modifier to see if your conform. If they don't you can use avirecomp or even autoGK to re-encode them for compliance.

  4. Your player might not play the format of the avi you have.

Avi is just a container of various formats.

Wait ... how do you create a DATA DISC with ImgBurn? ... I didn't know that was possible!

I use ImgBurn to create an ISO IMAGE FILE and then burn it with ImgBurn but that's for a DVD Video.

Damn this is the 2nd new thing I'm finding out today. Some expert I am LOL

  8. Nero Burning Rom works fine. Select DVD-ROM ISO format. To be safe select No Multisession. Drag your AVI files to the compilation window and burn.

That is typically what happens when a DVD isn't finalized (AKA closed). Stand alone Divx/DVD players usually only look at the master table of contents (TOC). Until a DVD is finalized the TOC isn't written. So when the player goes looking for the TOC nothing is there. It keeps trying and trying until it finally gives up. After a few minutes most players will spit the disk out or give a "no disk" error message.

Using No Multisession in Nero Burning ROM causes everything to be written in one session then the session and DVD are closed.

Download Gspot (search on the web for the 2.6X version and do NOT install the 2.2 or earlier versions as they won't help you) and install it and open some of your videos with it. Possible problems include using QPEL or MMC. If you see these hilighted in Gspot, that could be your problem. Files larger than 2 GB can be a problem. MP4 or MKV containers can also be problems for standalone players. AAC audio can be a problem. Multisession burns can be a problem.
