First time I noticed this problem was when trying to re-encode to .wmv. I tried Virtual Dub, TMPGEnc, Windows Media Encoder, Windows Movie Maker, and some trials I installed and then uninstalled (one was WinAvi). They would all start encoding and then crash before they finished. This happens no matter what file format, not just .wmv. My PC doesn't freeze or restart, only the program doing the encoding crashes.
From a little search in this forum it might be a codec I've installed that's broken everything. If that's true is it a matter of just finding them all and taking them off until it works or is it something more involved? And could there be another cause to the problem?

You'll want to unistall most tool's and codec packs (evil bugger's) first , before following this tool
http://paul.glagla.free.fr/filmerit_en.htm ... read the page in relation to fixing any problem's .
Then reboot the pc , and try clip's .
Example , avi using xvid and mp3 audio ... install xvid codec only , and then try playback . -
Okay, thanks I'll try that for now, I must have collected quite a lot of codecs and various tools.

Could be a hardware issue. Encoding is intensive and flakey hardware can crash due to it heating up. Start with ram, then cpu then possibly power supply.

Looks like hardware is the next step, deleting all tools and codecs didn't fix it.

I'd go with what ZippyP. mentions. Try running MemTest86 on your RAM, if it passes, then you can probably rule that out and look for other causes: http://www.memtest86.com/
Also check for CPU overheating. If you have a temp reading program, that's the easiest. If not, pull off the left side case cover and blow a desk fan in there and try it again. Look for dust in the CPU cooler while you are at it.
From there, a PS or many things could cause that if you are convinced it's not a software issue. -
On the hardware front:
Before: Be careful about static electricity, ground your self before touching components, pull power cable from case as atx components are could still have power applied when power is off
1) disable all overclocking if applicable
2) Make sure cpu and all other fans work
3) Remove heatsink from cpu and clean all old heatsink compound off cpu and heatsink and reapply
4) clean and reseat memory modules
5) use canned air and blow out cpu, case and power supply fans
Sorry redwudz....we were both typing at the same time... -
Before we go p***ing about in the hardware people ... hold on ... we haven't explored all os issue's that may be remaining yet .
The system isnt crashing , so it can not be determined it's a hardware fault at all .
You might want the ms install cleanup tool ... those program's may have left issue's in the registry ... thinking the system's not actually crashing ... I'd be looking at some issue within the registry itself as to why these tool's are having problems' ... I struck this a couple of time's before ... turned out I needed that ms install clean out tool because of quicktracks sound , or something similar by name that gets installed at the same time as ulead videostudio 9 , would popup during the running of several programs ... and repeatedly so ...
Everytime I ran dvdauthorgui , sony vegas , developers pad , visual basics 6 pro ... there was that infernal nuisance twit ... I dont even use it ... after 5 "get off's" ... it usually racked off .
Until I ran the tool ... this had me ticked right off .
So do that next .
--------------------
Ad-aware se , update , and if it finds anything , guaranteen them , and delete the backup .
--------------------
Avgfree , update , scan system ... if anything found , remember to empty the vault ... even from the vault they can deny net services .
Some get into system restore point's , that avg can handle ... but whether restore point's remain in tact , and useable would be another thing .
-------------------
Clean out system temp folders .
Man , how many time's have I typed this this week ...
Windows explorer , tool's , folder options , view tab
Check "show hidden files and folders" , and the two below that .
Answer yes to idiot popup , apply , then ok .
Documents and settings
User logon account by name only , all that have live owner's , incase you share the unit with family members .
Local settings .
Temp folder , sellect all here , hold down shift key , and right click on any , and choose delete ... aka ... them's gone from pc for good .
Do the same trick in temporary internet folder ... but only 4 screen's worth at a time till empty ... has a habit of sitting on it's butt saying "Im not responding now" , close and come straight back , keep going till that folder is completely empty .
Say no to cookie deletion , some hold password's ... like this forum .
Close windows explorer .
-------------------------
Hijackthis , grab it , scan system ... disable messenger , quicktime , itunes , printer tray utility ... those you recognize as being added on to system by you .
Allow it to fix .
Restart pc , and rescan , pm log if you find something unknown in list and need help in determining what they are .
------------------
If the last show's anything nasty ... it would require system restore to be turned off , reboot the system , rescan with avg and after , hiajckthis , pm log . -
Upon re-reading the posts, (I get blurry eyed and miss a lot of stuff, as many other probably do, especially due to excessive alchohol consumption) BJS may have a point, I thought I read "rebooting" when that was not a symptom, I agree with BJS's thoughts. Try all software related issues he mentioned...(now thats comforting...burp)

Don't worry GKar I've had my hands inside computers for 10 years, but all I was planning to do was run memtest not start pulling out the RAM. Thanks for the warnings anyway though.
memtest reported no errors so that's good news, I'll try the cleanup next and I'll also get hold of something to check the temp, it's a shuttle PC so it's pretty cramped in there and I'm sure the fan is noisier than it was when i first had it.
I've noticed something else tonight, TMPGEnc didn't crash when I encoded to lesser quality settings. Is there any chance that my PC is just too rubbish? I have an AMD 1900 which is nowhere near the latest thing but I'm pretty sure I've known lesser machines to cope with no problems. -
I was trying to capture a 2 hour VHS camcorder tape.
I first connected the VHS player to my newer Dv camcorder which converts analog to digital and captured to AVI. on my PC That was Ok, but I wanted better.
So I tried capturing using composite in on my ATI AIW 2006 and ATI's MMC Tv program. I kept getting "operation failed." That was because I had run out of hard drive space. The first AVI file using the camcord to convert was only about 10-20 gig (I don't remember exactly and have since deleted it. The second one was a whopping 150 gig (after I finally figured out what was the problem.
Since converting that 150 gig file took the better part of a day on a 3400+, I decided to try a different method using my Hauppauge pvr-500. I can't get WinTV to start - I get crossbar and can't setup filter errors, but I did get the pvr-500 to work with VirtualDub on both Rf and composite, but it crashes a lot when I switch settings (even audio settings).
What kind of crashes are you having? BSODs or the program just stops, or exits out, or what? Anyway check for adequate disk space as the error messages are not that explicit about what is the casue of the problem.**DFI:NF3 250GP; A64 2800+; 512MB; Audigy Plat. w. bay; Maxtor:200,80,160 & WD:200GB 7200/133; CDRW:48125W & DVD:163D; USB2/1394:WD 120,160GB 7200 & DVD +/-R/RW; Logitech Z-560 (400W)
