How did they record it? A set top recorder?

Either the media is not compatible or they failed to finalize the disks? Assuming they in fact burned the disks.

I'm sure the disc wasn't finalized as this happens all the time by people who aren't very experienced.

Please note that Germany uses the PAL system for TV, so any future DVDs they send you, even if finalized, may be a problem for you depending on whether or not your DVD player can convert PAL to NTSC. Many DVD players sold in the US can do this, but not all, and the default TV output configuration on most DVD players that can do this is wrong, which leads to problems too. Unfortunately, most DVD players sold in the US have a default TV output configuration of something like "multi" when it should be "NTSC".

DVD players can be fussy about various things - media, multisession (always a BAD idea) and so on. If your PC can't read the DVD then something is wrong with the DVD. PCs don't care about any of the issues that are troublesome to DVD players. I doubt the show was finalized if your PC can't read it. Give it to someone else and see if they can see it on their PC just to rule out a problem with your PC, but almost certainly the disc was not finalized.

loster is 100% correct, but the original post did mention playing the disc on a DVD player and on PC and I unintentionally overlooked the PC part of it, hence my talk about NTSC/PAL issues.
