DVD-Video already has its "First Play" feature built into the spec. You specify what you want to firstplay when you author the title(s). This works with software AND hardware players.

Anyway, autorun WON'T guarantee that it will run as soon as you pop a disc into a computer, as there are a number of factors going on here:

    1. Is autorun enabled?
    2. Is autorun enabled for that particular drive?
    3. Did user hold down [SHIFT] key to temporarily disable autorun for this disc?
    4. Is AutoInsertNotification disabled? (without this, computer wouldn't know that new disc was in drive until [REFRESH] was run)
    5. Is this an WindowsXP computer with "removeable disc autoplay guessing" enabled? (could conflict with it)
    6. Is there another application (WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc) that is loaded and running in the background that will conflict with the app in the autorun instructions? (this can freeze a computer sometimes)
    7. What app are you going to list in the autorun instructions?--not everybody has the same apps on their computer, and you have to specify an app (usually--there are ways to get around this)
    8. Is this computer a Mac or Linux box? (autorun won't work with them)

Too many things to worry about...

    IIWY, I'd forget autorun.

...or use VLC player on your DVD, and have autorun start that (telling it to load your video and start playing it).
But then again, all sane people turn off CD/DVD autorun as soon as they can, not to have Sony (and other malware companies) install their players, root kits and whatnot as soon as you get the idea to listen to your newly purchased audio CD using your computer.

    It's Sony-BMG, not Sony...

What Sony-BMG did is appalling - but it is not the doing of Sony.
