Hello
newbie here
I was checking out the "hot to author a VCD with Nero"
At the top it says:
"You can fit 740 MB on a 74 min CD and 800 MB on a 80 min CD on a VCD!"
Well, I have a AVI file (it might be Divx, but I am not sure)
It is approx 699 MB
Nero 5.5 has burned AVI's for me twice onto a VCD format
Every time I try to use Nero with this particular file, it just freezes up on me
I am using
system:
Dell Pentium 3 450 Mhz
384 MB RAM
TDK 12x10x32 CD-RW
medium:
Memorex 4x 650 MB/74 min CR-RW
What am I doing wrong here?
If that message was true about fititng 740MB onto a 74min CD-R then I should be ok, right?
I tried using TMPGE to convert the file to MPEG1 (I think it converts it to mpge1) but the output seemed pretty low quality (lots of black spots noticeable) and the whole process was estimated to take about 4 hours!
Help me out!
Cheers all!

crap...
Well, this movie is about 2 hours and 7 minutes long...
So, what is with that statement on this board
"You can fit 740 MB on a 74 min CD and 800 MB on a 80 min CD on a VCD!" ??
This sucks...

The file size statement is correct. I have burned mpg files using Easy CD Creator 4 to VCD that were just under 740 MB in size (112 mins, 734MB) and they play fine. Be aware that the directory files that will be burned as part of the VCD format take up a small amount of room ~ 10MB so keep your source file to about 730MB just to be sure. If you use CDRW's you get about 5-10 extra MB, if you're really stuck. I burnt an 806 MB file to VCD on an 80 min CDRW. Make sure you are using the "VideoCD - PAL" (or NTSC) template that comes with TMPGEnc. My video CD's look great, better than videotape.

Sorry, that should have been 1 hr 12mins, not 112 mins!!

"You can fit approx. 740MB and 800MB of MPEG-1 video onto a 74min/650MB CD and 80min/700MB CD respectively.
This is as the video tracks are burnt in MODE2 Form2 sectors which don't include the ECC (error correction codes) for data on normal CD-ROMs.
Nero doesn't burn AVI files of any sort as VCDs -- rather, it converts the AVI files to VCD compatible MPEG-1 first. If you need to take this step, TMPGEnc is highly recommended as it is simply a superior MPEG-1 encoder.
If you ARE NOT converting your AVI files to MPEG-1, then you haven't been making VCDs. AVI files on a CD-ROM are NOT VCDs.
Then the user data capacity for CD-ROMs is 650MB and 700MB for 74 and 80 minute media.
Regards"
Can someone walk me through the settings on TMPGE ?
I tried setting the aspect ratio to "NTSC" but i sitll get blotchy transfer with poor sound
What am I doing wrong here?
Should I change the bitrate settings?
framerate?
aspect ratio?
It is a 2 Hour 7 minute movie
and TMPEG lists the estimated time at over 5 hours. is this correct??
Help!
thanks!

LAST QUESTION (I hope)
Are there ANY benefits to me making this into a SVCD as opposed to a VCD?
And what is the difference in TMPGE between "NTSCVideoCD" and "NTSCVideoCDFilm"?
(ok, that was two quesitons)
Thanks so much guys!
