My camera churns out videos in MP4 format. Very few of my customers can read these and it's causing me real problems. I need to

    1. find a tool that will convert MP4 to a more common format (.avi)?

    or

    2. find a free reader that will play the MP4 files.

Please bear in mind that I need to retain both picture quality and sound.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Download and install Quick time. It should work for most MP4 files.

VLC Player, it's relatively small and it's self contained with all the codecs needed to play virtually any file format.
