  1. I recently had a friend make a backup of the NAV disc in my 2006 Infiniti Coupe. From what I can tell there is no copy protection on the original DVD-ROM.

He used an HP DL burner and a Verbatim DL disk, the default of 'book type' was recommended and he burned it using CloneCD at 1x.

The disc works in the vehicle, BUT............ the access time is triple what it is using the OEM disc. For instance if I drive down the road using the backup, the map on the display keeps up with the location of the car.

But if I stop and try to enter a destination or street name, it takes at least 20 -25 seconds between when I can enter letters or numbers, whereas the OEM disc allows me to enter the names and numbers as fast as I can move the joystick. I can hear the unit trying to access the disc constantly during this process, it never does that with the OEM one, or if it does it's not noticeable or detrimental to using it.

From this description can someone advise me as to why they think the access time is so slow using the backup disc?

I want to use the backup because there is power going to eject button on the NAV unit all the time, even when the key is out of the ignition. IE: If someone gets into my car they can push the EJECT button and steal the disc!!

I also found that someone make a backup using NERO and they simply made an image and copied the image, using the same media type, Verbatim and they swear it works fine.

    Thoughts anyone?

    Thank you,

  2. might the media (ID) you used. try another brand. Verbatim is usually good thought. also try copying at 2 to 4x. no particular reason why.

after re-reading your thread the problem might be the DL -type media. not too compatible (about 70%) with players. also maybe the break point is in the wrong place.
is the original a DL DVD?
lastly maybe it's your particular player in your vehicle; don't like the lowing reflectivity of dye-based media.

Yes the original disc is DL so I had no choice but to use that type DVD. I was also told to make sure to use 'book type' which we did when we burned it at 1x.

I am going to try one more Verbatim and then try another brand. Both the OEM disc and the Verabtim I used have the silver media base, what the dye is I can't say, but there must be some reason the player doesn't like the dupe we made.

    Thanks for your input!

I suspect it is just a hardware issue, your player most likely has trouble reading burned media, or at least your current Verbatim disc. Another brand may help, or it could also have the same slowness.
