I bought a Pioneer DVR-111D to better handle -R media.

    I had a stack of -R media rejected by my Sony/Lite-On DRU-710A.

So my next writer was a Pioneer 111D/710. Then I bough 50packs of Verbatim -R and +R.

The 111D did burn most of the old -R media but "goes walkabout" at times. The strange thing is when it refuses -R Verbatim media it often burns with the +R Verbatims.

Do I have a faulty writer? Again? This is a replacement.

Judging by my own experience with a few DVR-111Ds, I would say "Yes", either that or there is something wrong with your hardware set-up. Maybe you are not in PIO mode or are multi-tasking while burning?????

edDV what firmware are you using on your replacement 111D drive? Have you tried using the latest firmware? You could try a different brand of DVD-R since there have been reports of bad batches of VERBATIM dvd media.

    Firmware is v1.23 dated 11 May, 2006
Connection is Ultra DMA Mode 5
    Media was Verbatim -R 16x
All +R media has worked so far.

I see that a new firmware version is out (v 1.29)
    I'll give it a shot.

I believe there's a 1.29 firmware update at http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/content/support/support/software.html, and you might try updating firmware to see if it helps.

  6. You can always use the Buffalo 8.29INT firmware to auto-bitset +Rs to -ROM and forget about -Rs altogether.

(PS. You need to download+flash using the Buffalo 8.19INT BEFORE flashing to 8.29.)

True but maybe the OP preferred DVD-R media.

I updated the firmware. No -R Verbatim coasters yet.

Hey, come on! The dude bought both types (+/-) .

Anyways, he should use the Buffalo firmware anyways. No reason not to.

Some would prefer to use official PIONEER firmware for their drives because using the Buffalo firmware which is considered hacked/3rd party firmware will void the PIONEER warranty.
