Why does everytime i convert my DVD to Xvid i have black widescreen borders? Is there anyway to get rid of them via the PC rather than ripping the DVD again? or does all of them have them?

Open the AVI in VDub(Mod). If you don't see black borders, it doesn't have any, and the player is adding them to keep the AR upon playback. If you do see black borders, then you didn't crop them away before encoding, and it's your fault.

When you opened it in VDubMod, you saw black?

If so, then you crop them away using the Crop Filter (followed by the Resize Filter) in AviSynth:

One fairly easy way to get a script to use is to make the D2V using DGIndex, and then open it in Gordian Knot. In the Resolution Tab you crop and resize the picture. Then in the upper left, File->Save and Encode to get the script.

You can do the same thing using VDub (although with slower and poorer results).

And you can also let AutoGK do the whole thing automatically. No more black bars.

If you didn't see black on your PC then the only way to get rid of them on your TV is to crop your video on your PC before you encode. This means cropping not just any black areas top and bottom, but also cropping off the image to the left and right until you have a 4:3 frame. This also means losing image that may contain important plot information.
