I have the above DVD writer for the last couple or so. It stills has the original firmware (not sure exactly what version)as I have not flashed and don 't really want to as it sounds quite complicated. I was using Verbatim DVD -R 4x media which seem to work fine. However these discs have now all been used yesterday I purchased some Philips -R 16x media - it seems like 4x media isn't readily available now. However this doesn't seem to want to work.
Should 16x media work on this player - obviously I am not expecting it to write at 16x! I have read some of the posts on this Forum that suggest that the problem may be that the DVD writer firmware doesn't recognise 16x. I acknowledge that I may have to purchase some more media, would like to go back to Verbatim but can only seem to get hold of 8x - will these burn on my writer or will I experience the same issues?
Regards
Simon

I have a NEC 2500 also. I flashed mine years ago, not hard or complicated, just read up on it.
Should either flash in DOS, or safe mode if you flash in Windows.
Been so long ago for mine I don't recall exact details so I don't want to offer any detailed advice, just it was very easy and trouble free.
I think I used the firmware from Herrie and it added daullayer support and I beleave 8X speed. However I had a huge stack of 4X disks, I think I burnt maybe 1 8X disk since the flash and it was fine, and I never tried to burn a daul layer disk. I don't remember now how fast the 8X disk actaully burned, but I played it last night and it's fine.
I geuss in the long run I probably did not really need to flash mine as I don't think I used the advantages of the new firmware really. But at least it did not mess anything up, I can say that for sure.
I have 8X Ty disks coming in soon, ordered them from Rima.com Saturday so with the holiday I expect next week before they arrive here.
If you order online you should be able to find slower disks.
I burnt a Maxell 8X disk last night on the new drive a 111D with imageburn program, I did notice the write speeds listed as supported for that disk was 2x up to 12X
I don't normally use Maxell disks, but it was here so I did. Then I forgot to change the burn speed in the Imageburn program and My 16X burner wrote the 8X disk at about 3.2X as shown by imageburn and when I looked it showed the program was set for a 4X burn, I forgot to change it to 8X!
The 8X disk burnt slow and then played perfect on my DVD player. -
Buy the new one from Newegg and dump the 2500. We're talking $35 here.
Fagedaboutit.
The new one does burn 16 and also ram discs.

Look at all the complaints on the net before you buy one of those. They're a joint venture with Sony and don't get very good reviews. Probably better off with the 2500.

Back in June I though that Nec would not release a new firmware with improved 16x support for Nec 2500/2510. https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1526991#1526991
Back in November Nec released new firmware for NEC 2500/2510. This really was something unexpected. The new firmware has been already hacked to support bit setting. Just x-flash your NEC 2500 to the newer NEC 2510 firmware 2.0a.
Your NEC 2500 will become a NEC2510 and it will provide a better support for 16x media. Read about it in here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?p=1613924#post1613924
Follow this process on how to flash: http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/how2flash/
Firmware is in here: http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/2500/
Just download the Liggy's NEC 2510 bitsetting firmware 2.0A.
You can also use NEC official firmware: http://www.de.nec.de/softwareoverview2.php/id/1333
Nec Flasher is in here (BinFlash): http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/
You may use Binflash Win32 GUI v1.36. -

Ok I have tried that to no avail, I receive the following message (same as before)
No additional sense information 00000
I thought this was to do the fact that the media wasn't being recognised due the write speed, however having successfully (I think) flashed the drive this now seems unlikely. I have googled this message and some information from people who have experienced the same message and there has been some talk of crossflashing the drive which I really don't like the sound of.
Has anyone at all experienced the same message and managed to find a solution. I am really quite getting fed up now. If I can't get this sorted I will have to get some new media.
Thanks in advance.

Finally it could be that this media is not compatible with the NEC. I have used 16x Sony (made in Japan) and 16x Verbatim with no problems with the NEC burner.
Good luck. -
Thanks for you help I think I will just have to buy myself some verbatim 8x disks and hope that they work!

Buy the new one from Newegg and dump the 2500. We're talking $35 here.
It's not always that simple either. Yes I bought a 111D for less than $40 delivered. It is writing 1X to a 2X disk, maybe the disk is a 4X even, not certain.
I have lots of disks, G02, G03, the NEC 2500 writes those as a 2X disk, maybe faster. 111D has writen everyone so far as a 1X disk.
I am looking to upgrade and mod the firmware for the NEC 2500 so that the G02 and G03 will write at 4X, although I do not have alot of these disks left, I do have many!
And the fact that the 111D only writes these disks at 1X totally pi$$e$ me off also.
I was going to give the daughter the 111D and the Ritek disks for her system to get her started, 1X is not going to cut it. So I geuss she will get half the TY 8X I have ordered if they burn well and fast on the 111D.
As far as the NEC 2500, it works perfect, why buy a new drive when this ain't broke?
$32/100 for TY disks, or a new drive for no reason, gee where would we get the most value from?
And a new drive may OR may not work as well.
Myself I'd rather update firmware when I can and keep a known good working drive, then spend the money on disks or ink. -
Bought some Verbatim 8x -R media today and it has worked a dream. Thanks for trying to help me.

Hey, an update on the 8X
My NEC2500 has been burning the 8X Ty Yuden -R now at 8X!
No problems anywhere, all great disks so far.
I am not sure what firmware I have flashed it to since I did it long ago.
Also the 111D I mentioned only burning at 1X, it burns these 8X disk at 12X just fine!
It seems the 133 IDE controller card and DVD burners do not like each other. I removed the NEC2500 and installed the 111D on that cable (IDE2 master, system board IDE controller) and the 111D is writting 12X on the Ty's.
Why I cannot burn a disk over 1X speed on the IDE controller card I am not sure yet. 111D showed to be DMA 4 etc...
I had the same problem when I installed the NEC2500 to the controller card, it would only write 1X to the 2X or 4X disks.
