For the first time I am going to burn a dual layer disc, but the DVD drive won't let it. What am I supposed to do in order to let it work?

Yikes! Do you really and truly mean DVD-R DL and not DVD+R DL? I'll assume you did not make a typo, but there is a huge difference.

First of all, ONLY use Verbatim media. If by some miracle you can get Taiyo Yuden's DVD-R DL discs (they are not exported to North America, but maybe you can get them in Sweden), they are OK. Do NOT use any other brands!

Second, use ImgBurn to burn the disc. DVD-R DL requires special settings that DVD+R DL does not use and ImgBurn can correctly burn the discs. Other burning programs may not handle DVD-R DL discs correctly.

I'd guess that you probably used another brand and your burner needs a firmware upgrade to have a write strategy for your discs. Note that any money you save in buying cheaper brands will be eaten up when you throw away bad burns. It's just not worth trying to save money instead of buying Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden (again, if you can get them in Sweden).

My limited experience with DVD-R DL discs is that they aren't as well supported as DVD+R DL discs and they cost a lot more. Unless you have some kind of player that simply cannot play DVD+R DL discs but can play DVD-R DL discs, I can't think of any reason to pay for DVD-R DL discs over the +R ones.

I have only used Verbatim DL + discs. The DL - disc may be the problem.

EDIT: It looks like jman98 already mentioned this.

The link you provided says that your burner supports DVD+R DL. There really is no reason not to use +R DL discs. However, if your burner won't burn it then it doesn't have a write strategy for it. Try to look for an update of firmware for your burner.

By the way, your burner is old, which is probably why it seems to need a firmware update. If you must burn these discs, use ImgBurn as I said (it's free), but note that my limited experience is that the -R DL discs typically aren't as well supported as +R DL. I've had playback problems with the very very few -R DL discs I burned on some players. That plus the high cost per disc (a little under $3 US per disc) made me lose all interest in the format.

ImgBurn can also find you firmware updates for your burner most times. Try 'Tools>Drive>Check for firmware updates'.

I never tried that before, so I thought I would see what happens.

Sorry, it looks like ImgBurn's link is broken. But the main page is still there: http://forum.rpc1.org/

  9. Actually, I've been at a total loss ever since they got rid of this link http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php and thats the one that's in the sticky in the DVD writer section here.

Just can't figure their site out anymore. It was really easy back when the link worked. Progress I guess

I have the same problem but then with a Matshita dvd writer. I tried Verbatim DVD+R DL in both CloneCD and Imgburn and it didn't work either way... Any ideas?

Pablo2k1 - Welcome to the forums, but in the future please do not cross post. Your other post on your problem is sufficient. I have not reported this, but the moderators may eventually catch it and close this thread. Please continue in your other thread.

Since you're new you won't know this, but we aren't real fond of hijacking threads either. Your post is not only a cross post (because you already posted about your problem in another forum here), but a thread hijack because the original thread was not about Matshita writers. Although this does not apply to your post here, we also discourage posting to threads that haven't had a post in months or years. Many new people dig up ancient threads and try to post helpful information, but the problem is that the person who started the thread may not have logged into our site since making the original posts, so it's just a waste of effort to post to old posts. So in summary for any new member...

    1) Don't cross post.
    2) Don't hijack someone else's thread.
    3) Don't post to old threads.

Based on the reply in your other thread, it seems that your answer is that your writer isn't very good and doesn't really support DL media very well.
