i'm starting to shoot my first feature. All my money is going into that, so buying a bigger hardrive is something i would really like to avoid. right now i think i get like 3 miutes of video for a gigabyte. If i could get up to even 5 miutes per gig, that would maybe solve my problem.

Does anyone know if thats a problem using avid express?

I don't know about Lagarith or MJPEG, but HuffYUV will not get you 1 gig/5 minutes at 720x480. It might at a lower resolution. HuffYUV and Lagarith are both lossless. DV comes close at 13GB per hour (12GB per hour would be 1 gig/5 minutes), but DV is slightly lossy.

  4. Lagarith won't do it either. I usually get 16-20 GB per hour. Time to spend $100 on a new hard drive.

Cineform might do it, but only supports up to 1440x1080, and it isn't free. Still, it's even faster than Huffy and compresses much better than Lagarith.

I agree. Bigger hard drive. Get a fan for it as well.
